CAUSE AND ORIGIN
INVESTIGATION:
Since the early 90’s the courts have looked to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for standards and guidelines for the investigation of fires. Principal among the standards developed by the NFPA is NFPA 921; entitled Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigation. This guide sets forth standards and procedures of proper methodology for fire investigators. Although ‘cause’ investigations are different than ‘origin’ investigations - the methodologies bear some similarity. The leading differences are that origin investigations call upon persons technically trained who utilize scientific method.
Until the 1990’s, fire investigation was performed by many untrained individuals, mostly retired firefighters, basing their opinions on subjective empirical data that was in-turn, often based on false or psuedo-science, if not all-together myth. With the advent of NFPA 921, there exists now an objective basis for establishing the credibility of expert testimony and findings cited in cause and/or origin reports.
After a loss occurs, it sometimes becomes necessary to either determine or rule out certain causations. When these questions arise, FWR Professionals can quickly respond to the scene with experienced technical, engineering and/or forensic evaluation of the loss site and circumstances to address issues of either cause or origin. These services are most often utilized where an intentionally caused loss is suspected. Additionally, these services are utilized in matters of subrogation against third parties.
