Types of Water Damage: 
‍It is critical to first identify the source and type of the water before beginning the drying process. Fortunately, the type of water often helps lead us to the source or at least point us in the right direction.

Category 1 / White water is potable or drinking water most likely from a broken water line, well, water pump or other fresh water system including some boilers and hydronic heating / cooling systems, tubs, appliances, pools, spas, steam rooms and water treatment appliances. This water is not generally dangerous unless it becomes mixed or contaminated with other materials after it has spilled. 

‍Category 2 / Grey water is contaminated with other materials, generally biological materials decomposing or otherwise, household chemicals, cleaning solutions. Grey water comes from showers, washing machines, common floor drains, over ground and ground waters which may emanate from leaks, static pressure or overflow of gutters, french drains or other storm sewer sources. Grey water is not immediately hazardous but must be treated as such given the unknown chemicals and biological materials contained therein.

Category 3 / Black water is highly contaminated water containing bacteria and other organism that are dangerous to humans like, sewage / effluent from toilets, septic systems, sanitary sewers, etc. These come from plumbing failures, overflows and backups of sewer systems and require treatment as a biohazard. Removal of sewage and black water requires the employment of stringent protocols for clean-up, decontamination and sanitizing. FWR Professionals must identify the category and classification of water to effectively and safely restore your property. The type of water contamination will affect the required restoration standards and processes to be used.
